Pit firing at the Museum of Ontario Archeology
The Annual Traditional Pow Wow and Harvest Festival (aboriginal dancing, drumming, traditional Pow Wow, kids activities, cultural food & crafts, hands-on workshops, and more) is held each year in September at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology. Studio-users and affiliates of the London Potters Guild (LPG) demonstrate pit firing, the oldest known method for firing pottery, dating back as early as 29,000-25,000 BCE. The pit is dug, the pots and combustibles are arranged, and the fire is started Saturday morning. Burning overnight Saturday, the pots are eagerly uncovered Sunday revealing many wondrous treasures!
