In 2017, Daumante Stirbyte stepped off a plane from Ireland to begin her life in Canada. She had been chosen as London Clay Art Centre’s first International Artist-in-Residence and was anxious to get started. But first, she had to get her bearings and ...get used to that funny Canadian accent.
Once Dauma got settled in, she started producing a body of work that was unlike anything ever seen before in London. It didn’t take long for her fine porcelain sculptures of fantastical creatures from the ocean bottom to be noticed by others. Her piece ‘Inflorescence’ was named Best in Show at Fusion’s 2018 Emerging artist exhibition in Waterloo. In 2019, her piece, ‘Fleur de Lune’ was exhibited at the biennial exhibition at the Strand in London.
" I’ve always been very much fascinated with the natural world and the unusual creatures with whom we share the planet. I aim to instill a sense of curiosity and wonder in the viewer. Blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, familiar yet uncomfortable, the work is intended to suggest an eerie possibility of life forms we are not aware of. My creatures are much like unusual specimens at a natural history museum."
Daumante Stirbyte was born in Lithuania and moved to Ireland in 2007. She graduated from the National College of Art and Design (Dublin) in 2016 with first-class honours (BDes in Craft Design). Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows and is included in several private collections in Ireland. In 2017 she left to become the first International Artist-in-Residence at London Clay Art Centre, where she now teaches a sculpture class and works on various new projects.
